A memoir by James Johnstone, providing an account of his time living and working in India. The work provides a first hand account of life in India during the nineteenth century, discussing his work as a representative of the British government including his work helping to settle boundaries, his travels, the various tribes he worked with, and his observations on life in India.
He touches upon the Anglo-Manipur rebellion, stating his regrets that he was away on business during the height of the conflict. He discloses that he has a unique point of view as a British citizen living in India, and wishes to discuss the truth of the conflict, but has decided not to disclose the facts as the conflict had died down upon writing this memoir.
