A very scarce limited edition, being number 64 out of one hundred and four copies, being the only edition of this work, with the whole of the plates destroyed and the type distributed.
Illustrated with six monochrome original etchings by Charles Bird, all hand signed and numbered by the artist and with the original tissue paper coverings.
A brilliant limited edition collection of plates from Charles Bird, depicting the iconic city of Bristol and its historic events and locations. The work features six plates which depict notable areas and events such as the storming of Steep Street in 1643, the Abbey Gateway in 1510, the Proclamation of the Armada at the High Crofs, St James' Fair in 1780, the court room in the Norton Mansion, and the St Stephen's Ringers in 1625. Each plate is accompanied with descriptions and historical context by E. R. Norris Mathews.
In the original quarter cloth binding with cloth to the boards.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter cloth with paper covered boards. Externally, spotting to the covers, marks to the rear, slight rubbing to the extremities, and fading. Two small labels and an edition label to the verso of the front cover. Internally, pages loose as intended. Spotting and age toning to the front and rear pages, the odd spot and slight offsetting from the plates throughout. Original tissue paper covers present.
