Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz (1821-1894) was a German physicist and physician who gained international recognition for his invention of the ophthalmoscope.

This work on physiological optics is his magnum opus, providing theories on depth perception, colour vision, and motion perception. It is split into three sections. During the late nineteenth century, it became an essential reference work. Helmholtz worked on several editions of this handbook, due to a dispute with Ewald Hering who opposed his views on spatial and colour vision.
