A scarce, limited edition work.
Only two hundred copies of this book were published, with plates in various states. This is one of the very scarce 50 book limitation 'with the Plates on ordinary paper, coloured'. This copy is out of series.
Initialled by the publisher and engraver.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, title page vignette, and sixty further hand-coloured plates. Collated, complete.
Each plate is accompanied by a descriptive text leaf.
With a contemporary owner's inscription to the front free endpaper.
A wonderful celebration of the artistic achievements of British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank, praised as the 'Modern Hogarth' during his lifetime.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter calf binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, smart. Bumping and minor losses of leather to back strip head and tail, with significant rubbing to back strip and joints. Front joint starting, but firmly held. Rear hinge strained to head, and firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Plates exceptionally clean and bright. Instances of light spotting to leaves.
