What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A handwritten late 19th to early 20th century ledger, possibly from a solicitor, regarding mortgages, registers of investments and securities, dividends, and other financial matters for a small number of clients and addresses.

Written in the same hand throughout, it is not clear to whom this work belonged. There are handwritten entries to 136 of the 282 pages, with entries dated between 1896 and 1906.

At the top of a number of pages are such addresses as 105 Winchester House, 7 Lothbury London, and 6 Albyn Place Edinburgh, alongside information on stocks, dividends, and mortgages.

Other leaves offer information on payments from both individuals and companies, such as Messrs. Harris & Harris, Mrs. Richardson, and Frank Rushby. Loosely inserted is a cheque from Rushby to Harris & Harris for a sum of £1,836, dated 1903.

Other entries are headed with such titles as 'Schedule of Deeds', and entries regarding 'The Rational Bank' and 'The Commercial Bank of India'.

A later morocco label to the back strip simply reads 'Journal', and the hinges have been reinforced.

A very scarce and highly informative financial ledger, offering insight into the economic behaviours of the middle classes at the turn of the century.
