Five volumes, being volumes I, II, III, V, and IX only. Illustrated throughout. Pearson's Magazine was a monthly periodical that first appeared in Britain in 1896. It specialised in speculative literature, political discussion, and the arts. With contributors including Bertram Fletcher Robinson, Upton Sinclair, George Bernard Shaw, Maxim Gorky, George Griffith, H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Rafael Sabatini, Sapper, Dornford Yates and E. Phillips Oppenheim, many of whose short stories and novelettes first saw publication in Pearson's. It was also the first British periodical to publish a crossword puzzle, in February 1922. Volume III also contains the is the beginning of the first printing of Wells' 'The War of the Worlds' and it appears in a serialised form across two issues of Pearson's Magazine, volumes III (January to June 1897) and IV (July to December 1897). Volume IV is not included in this set.  Wells was paid £200 by Pearson for the publication of this novel, and he demanded to know the ending before committing to its publication. The novel was published in book form a year later. 'The War of the Worlds' is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extra-terrestrial race. It is regarded as one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon and has not been out of print since its initial publication. This set contains: Volume I, January to June 1896. With titles such as Animals as Criminals, The Chapel of Bones, and A Genius for a Year. Volume II, July to December 1896. With titles such as The Last Extreme, The Wealthiest of Nations, and The Fresh Air Fund. Volume III, January to June 1897. With titles such as Oil and Oil Kings, Captain Courageous, and Dark Dignum. Volume V, January to June 1898. With titles such as Animal Acrobats, Earthquakes, and A Garden of Children. Volume IX, January to June 1900. With titles such as The Ballad of Lady Clare, A Game of Chess, and Inside of the Earth.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine and board edges with the odd small mark to the cloth. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spines. Hinges strained to volume IX. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the fore-edge. With minor age toning to the extremities. Age toning to the endpapers with the bookseller's label to the rear pastedown.
