What Our Customers Say...

Description

Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The second edition of the important Hugh Thomson Peacock 'Pride and Prejudice'.

This copy printed in March 1895, with the first Peacock edition having been printed in October 1894.

Published five months after the first issue, and presented here in the original cloth binding, with gilt peacock to front board.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and over one hundred further vignette illustrations by Thomson throughout the work.

Thomson's was the first edition of Jane Austen's beloved novel to contain illustrations throughout, with previous editions, such as the Bentley 1833 edition, only containing a frontispiece. Irish illustrator Thomson was best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors including Austen, Charles Dickens and J. M. Barrie, inaugurating the 'Cranford School' of illustration with the publication of his 1891 Macmillan edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Cranford'.

Former owner's inscription of Alice M. Henry, dated 1901, to half title.

A bright example of this important edition of Jane Austen's classic Regency era romance.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Front board bright. Three small areas of fraying resulting in losses of cloth to front joint. Head of rear joint starting, with board just a touch tender. Shelf wear to back strip tail, with rubbing to rear board. Front hinge a touch strained and slightly tender. Inscription to half title. Internally, binding lightly strained throughout. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters, but generally clean and bright, with only the odd light spot to gutter.
