In the original cloth binding. 

Friend and former student of Pater's, Charles Lancelot Shadwell, collected and published this volume of Pater's essays on Greek mythology, religion, art and literature. It includes fine studies and discussions of Dionysus, Demeter and Persephone, the boyhood of Hippolytus and the beginnings of Greek sculpture, among other topics. 

Walter Pater was an English essayist, art and literary critic, and fiction writer, regarded as one of the great stylists.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with marks to the boards and slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities, most notable to the head of the spine. Front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are marginally age toned, with pencilled notes to the rear endpaper and rear pastedown. Contemporary ownership ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Offsetting and scattered spotting to the endpapers.
