Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, a folding colour map to the rear, and sixty-three monochrome illustrations by Riou. Collated, complete.
Parfait-Louis Monteil was a French colonial military officer and explorer who made an epic journey in West Africa between 1890 and 1892, travelling east from Senegal to Lake Chad, and then north across the Sahara to Tripoli. This is an account of his travels.
With the bookplate of Francis E. B. Witts to the front pastedown. He was a Church of England clergyman and amateur bell-ringer.
Monteil was the first Frenchman to travel to Lake Chad, and the first European to reach it via the Atlantic.
Condition
In a half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip, joints, and board perimeters. Small loss of calf to back strip head. Fading to front board perimeters. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
