This volume is a firsthand account of the Battle of Waterloo, offering unique insights from someone who not only participated in the battle but also spent over fourteen years as a guide on the battlefield.
Edward Cotton (circa 1792–1849) was a British cavalryman who served with distinction in the 7th Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. He participated in the Battle of Waterloo, where his horse was killed under him. He also established a Waterloo museum.
With 14 illustrations, 6 plates with 1 illustrated fold out plate, including an engraved portrait frontispiece of Napoleon and Wellington, and a fold-out map to rear paste down. This copy also includes a scarce errata slip. Collated, complete.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Slight damp staining to boards and spine, causing slight discolouration. Spine faded. Hinges slightly strained. Endpapers age toned with one or two spots. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages age toned with the odd spot, heavier to plates and first and last few leaves, but otherwise bright and clean. Slight offsetting to pages with plates.
