Description

Illustrated, Rebound, Very Scarce

A unique and very scarce scrapbook, containing a wealth of newspaper clippings, dating from 1895 to 1925, relating to Wilhelm II, World War One, and the Kings of Bavaria.

The primary focus of the work is Wilhelm II. All of the clippings take a negative and/or satirical standpoint on the Kaiser, portrayed through many articles and caricatures. The clippings on Wilhelm range for decades, from his state visit to the Ottoman Empire in 1898, to his life after the First World War. Wilhelm was an unpopular figure, trying to cement Germany's status as a leading world power, expanding the German colonial empire, though is erratic foreign policy and public statements played part of the downfall of the German Empire.

Articles include 'Ex-Kaiser as a Boorish Youth' and 'How Cecil Rhodes Side-Tracked the Kaiser', both by Lady Susan Townley, '"Woe to the Swankers"' by Spencer Leigh Hughes, 'The Two Williams' by Harry Beswick, and a series of reminiscences on the First World War titled 'Ten Years Ago To-Day'.

Including an issue of 'Le Rire', a special number which was decided to the Kaiser and his turn in the Middle East, which is illustrated with colour plates, including 'Hunting the Armenians', as well as an extract from 'The Review of Reviews', titled 'Recent Caricatures of the Kaiser'. The compiler has included further clippings detailing the importance of some illustrations, such as the 'Barbarossa' cartoon. Other newspapers extracted from include 'The Weekly Dispatch', 'The Illustrated London News', 'The Sunday Express', and more

Including to the rear a selection of clippings regarding the Mad Kings of Bavaria.
