What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

A collection of four very scarce works published by 'The Clarion' magazine.

A British socialist publication, founded by Robert Blatchford and Alexander M. Thompson, 'The Clarion' was associated with the Labour Party and trade unions.

The first of the four works present is Alexander Mattock Thompson's very scarce 1896 collection of fourteen literary sketches, 'Dangle's Mixture'. Some had previously appeared in the Clarion, and the Liverpool Weekly Post.

With a portrait frontispiece, retaining the original half title

The second work is the very scarce 1895 first edition of 'The Bounder: His Book: Being an exposition of home and foreign travel, with many moving adventures by sea and land'. Credited to Robert Blatchford, this work is a charming satire of nineteenth century travelogues.

With a portrait frontispiece.

The third work is the very scarce 1895 collection 'Contraptions', featuring forty-one short stories and poems, both socialist and non-political,  from the staff of the 'Clarion'. With a portrait frontispiece, and numerous vignette illustrations.

The final work is an 1895 edition of Robert Blatchford's very scarce literary work 'The Nunquam Papers', first published in 1891.

With a handwritten index to the front free endpaper, and the former owner's inscription of Duncan Macgregor Graham, Hamilton to a front blank. Graham was Labour MP for Hamilton from 1918 to his death in 1942.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Rubbing to back strip head and tail, and light rubbing to joints. Hinges lightly strained, but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper, and a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, with instances of spotting.
