The first edition, being either the third or second issue with the following issue points: the list of six titles to the verso of the title page, the uncrossed 'f' to the spine, and the list of eighteen titles to the advert to the rear including this work as 'Vol. XVIII'.

A well known adventure classic of English literature, set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania. This fictional country connotes a quaint minor European country, and spawned the 'Ruritanian romance' genre. The novel has been adapted to screen many times, with its most notable in 1937 and 1952.'The Prisoner of Zenda' is an adventure novel focussing on the drugging of the King of Ruritania on the eve of his coronation, which results in him being unable to attend. To evade the issue, an English gentleman who happens to resemble the monarch is persuaded to act as a political decoy.

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally, fading to the spine, with bumping and light wear to the extremities, with small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine, rear joint tender, minor cockling to the rear board, and marks to the boards including minor damp staining. Owner's signature and bookseller's blind stamp to the front free endpaper. Rear hinge starting. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages, minor offsetting to title page.
