The first edition of this work - the second collection of Holmes stories, following 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' -published in late 1893, with the date 1894 to the title page.

Illustrated with a frontispiece depicting Holmes's fall from the Reichenbach waterfall, and numerous further vignette illustrations, all the work of Sidney Paget.

The volume consists of eleven stories: "The Adventure of Silver Blaze"; "The Adventure of the Yellow Face"; "The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk"; "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"; "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual"; "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire"; "The Adventure of the Crooked Man"; "The Adventure of the Resident Patient"; "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter"; "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" and "The Final Problem".

The first issue, with the Strand Library illustration to the front board, bearing the 'Southampton Street' sign, as called for. One of 10,000 copies of this first edition, first issue.
