The first edition, first impression of this novel written in a collaboration between Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne, following a lengthy voyage of a stolen ship and three remarkable characters.
In the original publisher's full bronze cloth. Lacking the extremely rare dust wrapper. With the advertisements to the rear, dated 1894.
From the library of David Talbot Rice, who signed this book in pencil to the front free endpaper. Rice was an art historian and English archaeologist, notable for having led the excavations of the Great Palace of Constantinople in Istanbul, as well as numerous other achievements.
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. With general soiling to the boards, the spine darkened and slightly cocked forward. With David Talbot Rice's bookplate to the front pastedown, and a cutting with pricing of the different first edition bindings pasted to the front free endpaper. With a previous ownership signature to the front free endpaper, and in pencil to its verso. Internally. firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean throughout with only the odd minor spotting to the odd leaf, particularly to the first and last few.
