What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
The first edition.
Bound in the publisher's paper wraps.
Volume V of the Royal Commission on Opium, containing 'Appendices, Together with Correspondence on the Subject of Opium with the Straits Settlements and China'.
Set up by William Gladstone's government in 1893, the Royal Commission on Opium was tasked with investigating the opium trade in British India.
The commission was established due to political pressure from the anti-opium movement in Britain to ban the substance, however, the report ultimately defended the existing system in which opium sales were legal but regulated.
A fascinating and very scarce documentation of this investigation.
