1894 Palestine and Syria Handbook for Travellers
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Folding Maps, Publishers' Original Binding
The second edition, revised and augmented.
In the publisher's original cloth binding.
Illustrated with seventeen maps (nine folding), forty-four plans (two folding) and a folding panorama of Jerusalem. Collated, complete.
This is notably the edition which caused a famous lawsuit brought by Howard (a hotel owner in Jaffa and Jerusalem) against Baedeker with reference to some disparaging remarks about his hotels. Howard won the lawsuit and Baedeker was ordered to remove the critical comments. However in the next edition Howard's hotels were omitted and his business suffered greatly as a result.
Offering introductory information concerning hotels, cafes, bazaars, mosques, climate, history of art and more, as well as forty-two routes and excursions spanning across Jerusalem, southern Palestine, Samaria, the Lebanon, central Syria and northern Syria.
These 'Baedeker' handbooks set the standard for authoritative guidebooks for tourists, conveniently designed to be carried around in a pocket and available for reference by the user.
