The first edition, first impression of this work, with the books listed in the advertisements to the rear ending at no. 85. [Blanchard B1]

This was Buchan's "first formal appearance in print, completed at the age of nineteen" [Hillier & Ross 189].

With an introduction from Buchan, this work includes fifty eight full essays by Bacon, followed by 'A Fragment of an Essay on Fame' and 'A Collection of Apothegms'. 

With twenty-three pages of advertisements to the rear, and the former owner's inscription of Janet G. Mundy to the front pastedown.

With a tipped in notice from the publisher to the title page.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally bright. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, though somewhat significantly strained towards the rear. Pages clean and bright. Tipped in notice to title page.
