1893 The Unseen Foundations of Society, An Examination of the Fallacies and Failures of Economic Science
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Leather Binding
The first edition of this work.
George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, argues in this work that economists of his time had overlooked and undervalued essential moral, social, and institutional elements that underpin economic life.
Rather than treating economics purely as a mathematical discipline, he urges a more holistic view that acknowledges the role of law, custom, religion, and character in shaping economic behaviour and outcomes.
The Duke of Argyll argues in his work that the proper foundations of society - for example trust, fairness, duty, morality and the rule of law - are 'unseen' precisely because they are so fundamental and therefore taken for granted, yet they are indispensable for markets and civilisation to function.
