Inscribed by the author to a front blank 'To Wallis with Raoul's best wishes'.
The author, R. Dubus, or 'Raoul', provides a detailed account of pigsticking - a form of wild boar hunting on horseback with spears - practiced by British colonial officers in Bengal during the late 19th century.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, and five further plates of portraits. Collated, complete.
With a publisher's catalogue to the rear dated August 1893.
With the stamp of W. C. Lydiard to the half title.
Raoul recounts his two decades of experiences, offering vivid descriptions of the hunts, the techniques employed, and the challenges faced. The work serves as both a sporting narrative and a historical document reflecting the attitudes and practices of British colonials in India.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Significant tide marks and handling marks to boards. Centre of front joint starting, with significant loss to cloth. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Signed to a front blank. Library stamp to half title. Front blank to dedication leaf (including half title, title, and frontispiece) detached and loosely inserted. Internally, binding lightly strained throughout, with three gatherings working loose, and one plate detached and loosely inserted. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd handling mark.
