A very scarce first edition.

Inscribed 'H. A. Huxley from Mrs. R. Strachey Xmas 1894' by the author to the title page head.

With vignette illustrations throughout from G. P. Jacomb Hood.

Jane Maria Strachey, known as Lady Strachey or Mrs Richard Strachey, after her husband Lieutenant General Sir Richard Strachey, was an English suffragist and writer, and outspoken advocate for women's right to vote.

Full of whimsical, imaginative lyric poetry, Strachey's works for children have been compared with those of Oscar Wilde.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Front board bright, with light handling marks to rear board. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Former owner's label to rear pastedown. Internally, binding strained between gatherings. Inscription to title page head. Pages otherwise exceptionally clean and bright.
