What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Folding Maps, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

First edition.

Bound in the publisher's red cloth.

Illustrated with fifteen maps and plans, one vignette and two folding maps housed in the end pockets.

Collated, complete.

A travel guide to New Zealand published as part of 'Murray's Handbooks for Travellers', a popular series of travel guide books published in London by John Murray beginning in 1836. This informative guide presents useful information on numerous towns and points of interest across the country.

According to scholar James Buzard, the Murray style 'exemplified the exhaustive rational planning that was as much an ideal of the emerging tourist industry as it was of British commercial and industrial organization generally'. These works are thus a fascinating insight into both the mentality of those who would have purchased them, and the locations in question.

With a 52 page catalogue of original advertisements to the rear and endpapers.

Bookplate of Powell Newick.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's red cloth. Externally, very good, with some rubbing to the extremities causing small tears to cloth. Marks to the cloth and some fading to the spine. Hinges are a touch strained, but holding firm. Bookplate to front paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a few pages age toned and just the odd mark.
