    First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

    The first edition, first issue, with the illustration to the title page with the inscription 'Otomie, Princes of the Otomie', and the imprint to p.325. 

    Previously owned by the artist, Herbert Charles Sheppard, with his stamps to the title page. 

    Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece, vignette to the title page and twenty-three monochrome plates. Collated, complete. 

    A gripping adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, following a young Englishman named Thomas Wingfield. In this riveting work Wingfield has a brush with the Spanish Inquisition, and joins a Spanish expedition to New Spain, providing an interesting commentary on the early days of colonisation in South America.

    Lacking last page of rear catalogue.

    Condition

    In the publisher's original cloth. Externally smart with a slight lean, rubbing to the extremities, chips to the cloth to the head and tail of the spine, and a very minimal closed tear to the rear joint. Hinges slightly strained, with bookseller's blind stamp to front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound with generally bright pages with spotting, and tidemarks to the first twenty pages. Lacking last page of the rear catalogue. Owner's stamps to title page.
