Illustrated with fifteen plates, including a sketch map and plan, and with an additional frontispiece. Collated, complete.

Mixing observation with historical background, Worsfold records the landscapes, volcanic scenery, and rich agriculture of the island, while also commenting on Dutch colonial administration, the Javanese people, their customs, and religious life.

With the bookplate of Charley F. Embree to the front pastedown.

Worsfold also provides a historical account of the founding of Singapore.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Bumping and minor losses of cloth to back strip head and tail, with minor spotting to back strip. Hinges strained, and lightly tender. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd handling mark.
