The first edition of this illustrated guide to the New York city of the late nineteenth century.
The preface notes that 'the sketches gathered in this volume were written by the late Colonel John F. Mines for newspaper publication', and immediately gained favourable public attention. The publisher remarks that this work 'will be welcome to New Yorkers who find pleasure and pride in the history of their city'.
With numerous vignette and full plate illustrations depicting many of the recognisable landmarks of the city.
With two pages of advertisements to the rear.
Acquired from the sale of American novelist Paul Gallico's library. Gallico was a prolific writer, but is perhaps now best remembered for his 1969 novel 'The Poseidon Adventure', adapted into the successful 1972 motion picture.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Discolouration to back strip, with bumping to spine head and tail. Light marks to tail of front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean, and lightly age toned to perimeters.
