With a folding frontispiece. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of twenty-four stories mostly written in verse, although some are in prose, presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. Written by Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet, author, and civil servant considered the "father of English literature". Epitomised by Sir William Moir Calder, a Scottish archaeologist, epigraphist, classicist, and academic. Bound by Relfe Brothers Limited, London. Suitable for rebinding.

Condition

Bound in full red crushed morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine and board edges with a damp mark to the tail of the spine and boards. The odd mark with small splits in the head of the spine. Library mark to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with library ink stamp and contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpapers. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Relfe Brothers Limited, London. Suitable for rebinding.
