Bound in full calf prize binding, with a gilt stamp to the front boards and marbled endpapers.
With the contemporary prize bookplate from Mercers School to the front pastedown of Volume I.
These works contain concise biographies of an array of eminent figures around the world, but more particularly natives of Great Britain and Ireland.
Author Thompson Cooper was also a prolific contributor to the Victorian era 'Dictionary of National Biography', for which he wrote 1,423 entries.
With a supplement to the end of Volume II bringing the work down to the end of the year 1882.
Condition
Uniformly bound in full calf prize binding, with gilt stamps to the front boards. Externally, very smart. With slight rubbing to the extremities, most notably to the joints. A few small marks to the boards. With a prize bookplate to Volume I front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light spotting to the endpapers.
