Description

Leather Binding, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Complete in six volumes. Illustrated with fifty-five maps and plans, ten of which are in volume one, twelve to volume two, nine to volume three, eleven to volume four, eleven to volume five, and two to volume six. Volume one also contains a portrait frontispiece. Collated complete. A tremendously influential, if controversial, work. Napier had been actively involved in the campaigns of which he was writing, turning to creating a history in peacetime, in part to refute Southey's account of Sir John Moore. Because of his obvious lack of impartiality, modern military historians treat the work with caution, but it remains widely read. Significant events include the departure of Napoleon to France, and Wellesley's return to Portugal as commander of the Anglo-Portuguese forces. A successful work, on the completion and release of this sixth volume, Napier's reputation not only in England but also in France and Germany was well established. Written by General Sir William Francis Patrick Napier, a British soldier in the British Army and a military historian. Bound by R. Ingalton Drake.
