Description

Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Complete in ten volumes. Author's edition. A collection of works from Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., an American physician, poet, and polymath who was grouped among the fireside poets. He was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. This set contains: The Complete Poetical Works, 1892. In four volumes. With volume one containing his earlier works, volume two containing Songs in Many Keys and other poems, volume three containing Poems from the Breakfast-Table Series, and volume four containing his later poems. In 1830 Holmes began writing poetry for his own amusement and, before the end of the year, he had produced over fifty poems, contributing twenty-five of them to a Harvard publication called The Collegian. Four of these poems would ultimately become among his best-known: "The Dorchester Giant", "Reflections of a Proud Pedestrian", "Evening / By a Tailor" and "The Height of the Ridiculous". The Breakfast Table Series, 1890-1901. Being The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1901) in two volumes, The Professor at the Breakfast-Table (1890) in two volumes, and The Poet at the Breakfast-Table (1896) in two volumes. A collection of essays originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1857 and 1858 before being collected in book form. The essays take the form of a chiefly one-sided dialogue between the unnamed Author and the other residents of a New England boarding house who are known only by their profession, location at the table, or other defining characteristics. The tone is noted as distinctly Yankee and takes a seriocomic approach to the subject matter. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table was originally published in 1858 with the first sequel, The Professor at the Breakfast-Table, published in 1859, and its second sequel, The Poet at the Breakfast-Table, following much later in 1872. Four leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume II of The Poet at the Breakfast-Table.
