What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Signed Binding

In Bayntun half morocco bindings, complete in four volumes.

'A Short History of the English People' is a history of the inhabitants of England, focusing solely on the people, and not on Kings or conquests. This decision of the author's to ignore the battles meant that his work was criticised by other historians, who viewed those battles to be of great significance to the history of the people.

Volume I illustrated with a colour map to frontispiece, eleven colour plates, one monochrome plates, and many monochrome in-text illustrations.

Volume II illustrated with eight colour plates, one monochrome plate, and many monochrome in-text illustrations.

Volume III illustrated with a colour folding frontispiece, two colour plates, two monochrome plates, and many monochrome in-text illustrations.

Volume IV illustrated with a colour map to the frontispiece, three colour plates, and many monochrome in-text illustrations.

Collated, complete.

Historian John Richard Green began this work in 1869, having been given a diagnosis of six months to live.

Intended to be an account 'not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People', Green was criticised at the time for the omission of major historical events such as battles.
