A smart, leather bound edition of Sir Samuel W. Baker’s ‘Wild Beasts and Their Ways; Reminiscences of Europe, Asia, Africa and America’. Originally published as 2 volumes in 1891, this second edition provides Baker’s comprehensive work in 1 volume. Sir Samuel White Baker (1821 – 1893) was an English explorer, officer, naturalist, big game hunter, engineer, writer, and abolitionist. He was a friend of King Edward VII, who as Prince of Wales, visited Baker with Queen Alexandra in Egypt. Containing 29 illustrations by H. Dixon, collated. Signed by previous owner on first title page, “John . G. Javoy. Oct. 1891.
Condition
In half calf leather binding with crushed paper to the boards (?) Externally, smart. Gilt title and decoration to the spine. Some light markings to the boards. Some rubbing to the extremities. Spine faded. Marbled paper to pastedowns and recto of front endpaper. ‘Alan Thornton Witney, Oxon’ bookplate to front pastedown. Small sticker to bottom right of rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Light spotting to endpapers. Signed by previous owner on first title page.
