Bound in a full red calf prize binding with gilt decoration, for Craufurd College.

The Wars of the Cross, published circa 1883 and reprinted in 1891 by T. Nelson & Sons, is a comprehensive, history of the Crusades, illustrated with 38 engravings, including a frontispiece engraving of the siege of Jerusalem. Collated, complete. 

The work spans the era from the First Crusade in 1095 to the fall of Acre in 1291, offering a detailed account of the religious wars authorized by the Latin Church. It examines the motivations driving the Crusaders, recounts major battles, and analyzes the lasting effects of the Crusades on both Europe and the Near East.

Condition

Rebound in a full calf prize binding for Craufurd College. Externally, smart. The odd slight scratch to boards, with two more prominent scratches across the front board. Rubbing to boards, with the odd spot, slight soiling and fading to extremities. Spine faded and rubbed. Slight cracking at joints of spine, particularly to the tail of spine, but remaining firm. Previous owner's ink prize inscription "Arnold C. Thompson. Second English Prize, 1892." Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, if slightly age toned with the odd spot, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Perforations from where previous binding was sewn to half title page.
