First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed

A signed first edition of the fifth and final novel in the authors beloved 'What Katy Did' series.

Inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper: 'George Allen W. Baene with love from S.W., Christmas 1891'. 

Beneath this is a contemporary ink inscription, reading 'S.W. is Susan Coolidge and the above serves as an autograph. Alice M. Baene, Christmas 1891'.

Susan Chauncey Woolsey was an American children's author who wrote under the pen name Susan Coolidge.

Beginning in 1872, she wrote five children's novels about Katy and the fictional Carr family, with the family modelled after her own relations, and Katye based on the author herself.

With sixteen pages of advertisements to the rear.

Signed works by the author are vanishingly scarce.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Fading to back strip, with significant handling marks to boards. Rear joint starting to tail, and slightly tender. Author's inscription and former owner's inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with instances of light spotting.
