Hearn (1850–1904), a Greek-born writer of Irish descent, later became famous for his works on Japan; this book marks an earlier phase of his career when he was a correspondent for Harper’s Magazine.

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally very smart. Spine slightly faded. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight rubbing to boards. Damp staining to front free endpaper and slightly to front paste down. Library annotation to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot to first and last few leaves. Library annotation and stamp from Pawtuxet Valley Free Library, Phoenix, to page 13 and 431. Handling marks to verso of plate facing page 68.
