First thus. The second novel from the author, written just prior to King Solomon's Mines. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen plates. Collated complete. When a discovery of a box containing a well-preserved Saxon woman's head is made in a cemetery collapsing into the sea, the finders deem her to have been a witch. From this point on, things start to go wrong for those surrounding the discovery. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. Illustrated by Charles Kerr, a British artist and illustrator.

Condition

In the original full brown cloth. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot or handling mark. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page dated 1891.
