The 1890 volume of 'The Portfolio', collecting together the year's issues of the popular art magazine. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece, thirty-five plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.

'The Portfolio' was founded by Philip Gilbert Hamerton in 1870, and was published monthly until 1890. The magazine published essays on many different aspects and mediums of art; this volume includes 'The Designs of Walter Crane' by F. G. Stephens, 'Christchurch, Hampshire' by E. L. Seeley, 'Powell's Soda-Lime Glass' by Professor A. H. Church, 'E. Onslow Ford, A.R.A.' by Walter Armstrong, 'The Chemistry of Paints and Painting' by C. W. Heaton, and more.

This publication was an important piece of the British Etching Revival. This volume includes illustrations by H. Toussaint, J. J. Chalon, Henry Moore, J. M. W. Turner, E. Onslow Ford, Joseph Pennell, J. MacWhirter, Reginald T. Blomfield, and more.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. MInor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small tear to the tail of the front joint. Spine is discoloured. Hinges are starting but firm. Prize label to the front paste down. Internally, gutta percha binding is perishing, as is usual to see, with some pages detached or working loose, including the title page. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots and handling marks.
