Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition. Complete in two volumes.

In the publisher's original cloth binding.

Volume I illustrated with fifteen engraved plates (including frontispiece), a folding map and numerous in-text illustrations.

Volume II illustrated with twenty-three plates (including a frontispiece), two folding maps, one additional non-folding map and numerous in-text illustrations. Two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.

Collated, complete.

Henry Morton Stanley's fascinating account of his Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (1887-1890) to "rescue" the governor of Equatoria, Emin Pasha (who proved resistant to this). Despite its success, this expedition tarnished Stanley's name because of the conduct of the other Europeans on the expedition, including notably the now-named "Jameson Affair" involving James Sligo Jameson and the cruelty exhibited by Army Major Edmund Musgrave Barttelot.

Although Stanley's intentions from the expedition have long come under suspicion, this work remains a classic of African exploration.

With several leaves uncut.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Slight cocking to the spine to Vol I. Front hinge to Vol I and rear hinge to Vol II are starting, but firm. Marks to the boards. Armorial bookplate with 'Dirkey' and 'Spes Infracta' to both front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound.
