The first edition of the work, part of the Heroes of The Nations series. 

In full calf prize binding for Forest School, with armorial crest to front board. 

With a colour frontispiece, twenty five further monochrome plates and numerous in text vignettes, five of which are included in list of illustrations. Collated complete.

In his popular biography of the naval hero, Russell considers information which had yet to be confirmed since Southey's famous biography many years earlier. Like Nelson, Russell was introduced to life at sea from the young age of 13.

Condition

In full calf. Externally in lovely condition with slight rubbing to joints and extremities. The odd mark to the board. Presentation inscription to front blank. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot.
