What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce
Bound in full morocco.
A catalogue from S. Richards, an antique dealer based in Nottingham in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Richard's catalogues were published monthly between 1890 and 1920, and were filled with hand drawn images and descriptions of stock, which were then printed and distributed.
These very scarce catalogues provide a fascinating insight into the taste, prices and classifications of antiques of this period.
As depicted in this catalogue, Richards sold a vast range of antiques, including decorative bureaus, Japanese pottery, a "rare sword", carved walking sticks, and much more.
This particular volume is entitled 'Catalogue No. 1' from the 'New Series', from Jan 1890 to Feb 1892, gifted 'With S. Richards' Compliments'. These catalogues would be posted directly to collectors, from around 1890 until the end of the First World War.
Interestingly, the shopfront illustrated on the first page of text is almost identical in appearance to the building as it stands today, although it now runs as a cafe.
Condition
Bound in full morocco. Externally, smart, with rubbing to the extremities, causing a little loss to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge is strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with light scattered spotting to the page extremities and end pages.
