Description

Folding Plates, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Volumes II and III of a three volume set only. Scarce. With a folding plate to each volume. A fifteenth-century Middle English prose reworking of tales of the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table, along with their respective folklore. In order to tell a "complete" story of Arthur from his conception to his death, Malory compiled, rearranged, interpreted and modified material from various French and English sources. Written by Sir Thomas Malory was an English writer who identified himself as a "knight prisoner" though his identity has never been confirmed. The original edition of William Caxton now reprinted and edited by Heinrich Oskar Sommer, a professor of Medieval Literature.

Condition

In the original vellum binding. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities and fading as is typical with age. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities.
