1889 Nonsense Botany and Nonsense Alphabets
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon
The fifth edition of the work.
With an abundance of charming monochrome vignette illustrations accompanying the text, including several humorous mock-botanical illustrations of fictional plants such as 'Manypeeplia Upsidownia', 'Armchairia Comfortabilis', and 'Piggiwiggia Pyramidalis'.
Uncommon, with pre-1900 editions such as this especially scarcely encountered.
A delightful illustrated book of verse for children by the celebrated nonsense poet Edward Lear, who is most famous for having popularised the limerick. This collection is comprised of both Lear's 'Nonsense Botany' and 'Six Nonsense Alphabets', and also features three entertaining 'Receipts' or recipes which instruct the reader on how to cook eccentric delicacies like Amblongus Pie, Crumbobblious Cutlets, and Gosky Patties.
Condition
Full bound in the original publisher's pictorial cloth. Externally, attractive barring marginal rubbing and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities which has resulted in fractional splitting of the cloth. Hinges strained, almost failed, with the endpapers beginning to come loose from the text block. Internally, sections of the binding are slightly strained. Pages are generally bright and clean barring mild age spotting, slightly heavier to the outer leaves. A copy that is very good indeed given the work's scarcity and age.
