Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

A new edition of this work.

In the original cloth binding, with gilt illustration of the Pitons, St. Lucia to the front board.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, title page vignette and seven plates. Collated, complete.

This travelogue, which details James Anthony Froude's time spent in the West Indies, mixes personal anecdotes with his own thoughts on the British Empire, notably arguing against the establishment of self-government for the British West Indian colonies.

This book caused great controversy, stimulating rebuttals and most notably coining the term Froudacity by Afro-Trinidadian intellectual John Jacob Thomas, which he used in the title of his 1889 polemic 'Froudacity: West Indian Fables by James Anthony Froude'.

Froude was an English historian, novelist and biographer who became one of the best-known historians of his time for his 'History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada'.

With a twenty-four page catalogue of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
