First edition.
Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece and five tissue-guarded coloured plates, four maps and multiple monochrome vignettes. All illustrations are from drawings by William Luker Jr (1867-1951). Collated, complete.
In this study, Loftie discusses the geography of Kensington, the veres and manor, Holland House, Kensington Palace and Gardens, the church, in addition to 'modern Kensington' at the time of writing.
W. J. Loftie was a British clergyman and historical author specialising in London, travel, and architecture, known for his accessible and well-illustrated studies of the capital and its surrounding districts.
Condition
Bound in a smart half calf binding with marbled boards. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to calf. Slight rubbing to boards with minor loss to marbled paper. The tissue guard to the frontispiece is disbound, but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot and handling mark to first and last few leaves and one or two spots to fore edge.
