The very scarce first edition of this work, correctly dated 1888 to the title page. Newbolt 35.1, a blue cloth variant.

First published on 19 August, 1887, as stated by Newbolt.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, a double page colour map of Jerusalem, and ten further plates by Solomon J. Solomon.

Collated, complete.

Henty's novel follows John of Gamala, a brave and patriotic young Jewish man who becomes involved in the fight against Roman occupation, in a work which culminates in the siege and destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans.

With a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear.

Condition

In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with light shelf wear to back strip tail, and back strip a touch age toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
