Five volumes. The Badminton Library. A collection of volumes on sports and pastimes, from the sporting and publishing project conceived by Longmans Green & Co. and edited by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort. Between 1885 and 1902 it developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover comprehensively all major sports and pastimes. This set contains: Hunting, 1888. Fourth edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and numerous in-text images. Written by Henry Charles FitzRoy Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort, a British peer, soldier, and Conservative politician who conceived and edited the project of The Badminton Library which began with this volume, and Mowbray Morris, a British author and journalist. Shooting: Field and Covert, 1892. Fourth edition, revised. Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous in-text images. Written by Thomas de Grey, Lord Walsingham, an English politician and amateur entomologist, and Sir Ralph William Frankland Payne-Gallwey, an English engineer, historian, ballistics expert, and artist. Yachting, 1895. Volume one of two only. Second edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, twenty plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Sir Edward Sullivan, an Irish lawyer, and a Liberal Member of Parliament for Mallow, with contributions from many others. Big Game Shooting, 1903. Volume two of two only. New edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, sixteen plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Clive Phillips-Wolley, a British-Canadian official, author and big game hunter, with contributions from many others. Riding and Polo, 1905. New edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, twenty-five plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Captain Robert Weir, a British sportsman and writer, and J. Moray Brown, a British Army Officer who wrote several books on sporting topics.

Condition

In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine with a large split to the head of volume five. Front hinge held by cords only to volume one with frontispiece loosening. Rear hinge starting but firm to volume four. Hinges failed to volume five with text block detached from binding. Internally, generally firmly bound. Frontispiece and pages i to xii of volume five are detached but present. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and the odd small handling mark. Further spotting and light age toning to the endpapers. Bookseller's blind stamp to the front endpaper. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page of volume two. Pencil inscriptions to the front endpapers of volume five.
