This copy is undated. Dated here using Jisc, from copies held at various institutions including the British Library, University of Glasgow Library and the University of Oxford Libraries. 

Illustrated with 19 colour plates, including the frontispiece, and two monochrome elementary plates in the introduction and a coloured half-title. Collated, complete.

A detailed guide to British butterfly species and their characteristics with descriptions of their habitat, behaviour, and development, with precise morphological detail.

Written by John Obadiah Westwood, the renowned English entomologist and archeologist. He is also known for his artistic talents and has published several illustrated works on insect and antiquities.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading, damp staining, and rubbing to fore edges of boards with very slight cockling to perimeter of front board. Slight fading and rubbing to spine and extremities, particularly at the front joint. The odd slight handling mark to boards. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper "Amy, with love from auntie Winnie, Xmas 1920." The odd handling mark and spot to endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges strained in places, but holding. Slight tearing an inch or two along the gutter of the title page, not affecting the text or the binding. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves.
