1887 "Taken in;" Being, A Sketch of New Zealand Life
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
First edition.
Scarce work.
Bound in the publisher's original cloth.
An intriguing account of a woman's trip to New Zealand in the late nineteenth century.
Unlike many other books of the time which were trying to encourage Europeans to emigrate, this particular work depicts an altogether negative view of the country. The author concludes with the suggestion that those considering moving would deeply regret their decision, and she herself cannot wait to return home.
A collection of letters written to the author's brother, providing an account of her trip, commencing with a 'Diary at Sea' and ending with her 'Conclusion'. Many different aspects of New Zealand are discussed, including the climate, nature, food, prices, politics, Maori life, volcanic eruptions, and more.
Written anonymously by "Hopeful", this work has been attributed to a Miss Campbell.
