Compiled to commemorate the 1887 Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Written and illustrated by English author, painter and ropemaker, Joseph Crawhall. Known for his humorous and striking woodcut illustrations, Crawhall contributed to many issues of Punch magazine, as well as producing a number of books himself.
This charming work is filled with over eighty woodcut illustrations, depicting animals, various objects and figures relating to royalty. Illustrations accompany a series of verses and stories, including humorous "articles" from newspapers.
With amusing advertising to the rear wrap: "What?!! -only ONE SHILLING! this choyce Souvenir, for Loyall and Leale in OUR JUBILEE Year!".
Condition
Bound in the publisher's original pictorial wrap. Very fragile work. Wraps have almost entirely detached, with a small piece of tape holding the front in place. Loss to the majority of the backstrip. Chipping to the wrap extremities and the end pages. Age toning to wraps, with a few marks. Internally, binding is tender, with the first three pages disbound. Remaining binding is tender, and pages may detach with further handling. Pages are age toned and clean.
