    Description

    Fine Binding, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Pleasing Copy, Scarce

    A beautiful last volume copy of The Works of William Makepeace Thackeray', in a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Collated, complete with the author's illustrations within the text and 13 caricature plates. William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was a notable British author known for his highly satirical work 'Vanity Fair' that provided a scathing yet comical 'panoramic portrait of English Society'. Thackery also regularly contributed pieces to 'Punch' between the years 1843 and 1854 which are conveniently assembled and collected within this copy, and the other twenty-six volumes in the series.

    Condition

    In a half dark brown morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Elaborate gilded border to edge of half binding. Gilded title to spine with gilded floral decoration. Externally, very smart. Minor shelfwear to extremities. Slight rubbing to the front joint and raised bands on spine. Small cracks to the front joint. Tidemarks to the rear board. The front hinge is strained but firm. Red, pink and gold marbled pastedown and front and back free end-papers. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Pencil markings to verso of front free-endpaper. Hine split and tender before half title page. Occasional rough cut bottom page edges throughout Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot throughout. Foxing to the very fore-edge of pages, only visible to text block. Collated, complete with illustrations and 13 caricature plates. Black spotting to verso of plate ix, 'A Tea-Table Tragedy' and recto of plate x, 'Half an Hour Before Dinner'.
