A first edition of Franz Josef Brakl's volume on Modern opera. With with eight plates, and six folding plates. Collated, but lacking the score to accompany the portrait of Johann Strauss. Following an introduction to game opera, the Austrian tenor singer, theatre director, and gallery owner offers a descriptive history of dramatic opera and modern game opera. Remarkable prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. From the library of Emil Einstein. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper, dated January '94.

Condition

Rebound in a quarter leather binding over cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the rear joint. Rubbed to the front joint, which has a two-inch crack near the head of the spine. Lightly rubbed to the spine, with a couple of chips in the top spine label. The leather to the extremities and the rear joint is a little scuffed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are rather age-toned, but clean throughout.
